This information is given to allow you to make an informed decision about having your teeth whitened. Please take as much time as you wish to consider all treatment options available and ask any questions you may have about the procedure, and subsequent maintenance, before you make a final decision.
Currently I offer 3 alternatives for tooth whitening:-

Home whitening

This is similar to the consolidation (home) phase of whitening which is required by the above 2 systems. However this will take longer (3-5 weeks) to produce a predictable result. Special soft splints are made to fit your teeth, which every evening the patient puts gel into. These are then worn all night, or for at least 5 hours per day. Cost £345

Results and risks

Results will vary and regress due to a variety of circumstances. Whilst almost all healthy teeth will benefit from whitening, with significant results, the treatment is not intended to lighten artificial teeth ie. caps, crowns, veneers, composite(white) or other filling materials. People with darkly stained yellow or yellow-brown teeth frequently achieve better results than people with grey or bluish-grey teeth. Teeth with multiple colourations, bands “splotches” or spots due to tetracycline use or fluorosis do not whiten as well-requiring multiple or combination treatments, or may not whiten at all.

Teeth with many fillings, cavities, chips or cracks may not lighten satisfactorily and may be best treated by other non-whitening methods.

Zoom! Whitening is not recommended for pregnant or lactating women, light sensitive women, or patients receiving photochemotherapeutic drugs and treatments. Please consult your doctor if in any doubt.

Home Whitening procedures are generally considered safe by most dental professionals, however, please consider the following potential complications of this treatment.

Tooth sensitivity/pain-during the first 24 hours many patients can experience discomfort or tooth sensitivity. This is normal and usually mild, but can be worse in susceptible individuals. Normally this subsides after a few days, but it may persist for longer periods. People with existing sensitivity, recession, exposed dentine, severely worn teeth, open cavities or leaking fillings may find these conditions increase or prolong tooth sensitivity.

Tooth abrasion/erosion- These are conditions that affect the roots of the teeth when the gums recede. These are characterised by grooves, notches and/or depressions that appear darker/yellower than the rest of the tooth. Even these areas that are not currently sensitive may allow the gel to penetrate the tooth. Advice can be given about these lesions.

Cavities and/or leaking fillings- If open cavities are present, significant pain may result if the tooth gel is allowed to penetrate. All teeth must be clinically sound before the procedure is undertaken.

Relapse-It is natural for teeth undergoing any whitening procedure to relapse in shade. This should be a gradual process, but can be accelerated by exposing teeth to various staining agents. Just as teeth naturally darken over time, so will whitened teeth. Resolution involves a short course of home whitening. Individual syringes can be purchased for £15 each.
